Here are a few tips for doing clever keyword research that will help you get the most out of your SEO efforts.
Before you start your niche keyword research, it's important to know what you want to achieve with your website.
Are you looking to increase brand awareness?
Do you want to sell sponsored blog posts and ensure they'll rank well?
Drive traffic to your online store?
Get people to sign up for your newsletter?
Monetize the site through affiliate campaigns or programmatic ads?
One you know your intention, you can then start thinking about which keywords will help you achieve that goal.
A keyword like "best hiking boots" has a clear buying intent.
Something like "best Netflix series for binge-watching" has no clear buying intent and might be harder to monetize if you want to sell products on your website.
Be mindful of the keywords you choose.
Have you ever been stuck trying to come up with new keywords for your content?
If so, you're not alone. It can be tough to think of new variations on old keywords, especially if you're targeting a specific niche audience.
Thankfully, there's a tool that can help you with this task: Google Suggest.
It is one of the most underrated features.
Start typing in a keyword related to your topic and Google will suggest similar searches that people have made in the past.
This is a great, free option to get ideas for new keywords that you might not have thought of otherwise.
Another way to find good keywords is to see what your competition is using.
Just enter their URL into a tool like Long Tail Pro to check the details about their pages and how many backlinks they have (an important indicator for how tough it'll be to outrank them).
Why Check Your Competition's Keywords?
There are a few reasons why checking your competition's keywords can be beneficial.
First, it can give you an idea of which keywords are worth targeting. If your competition is ranking well for a particular keyword, chances are it's a good one to target.
Second, it can help you gauge how difficult it will be to rank for certain keywords. The more backlinks a page has, the higher it's likely to rank on search engine results pages (SERPs).
So, if your competition has a lot of backlinks for a particular keyword, you may have your work cut out for you in terms of trying to rank for that keyword yourself.
However, if they don't have many backlinks, you may have a better chance of ranking well for that keyword.
Either way, it's important to know where you stand in terms of competition before diving into niche keyword research.
Long-tail keywords are simply longer, more specific phrases that people are searching for.
They tend to be less competitive than shorter, more general keywords and they can be just as effective at driving traffic to your site.
To find long-tail keywords, simply enter a seed keyword into Google and scroll down to the "Searches related to" section at the bottom of the page.

There are tons of different tools available online that can help with keyword research.
